The upstream section of the Miyara River is only accessible by kayak or stand-up paddleboard. Here, you paddle through the densest parts of the 225-hectare protected forest.
The core of the mangrove forest stretches for 1,500 meters along both banks. This area is dominated by Yaeyama Hirugi trees, which create a thick canopy over the water.
You must use paddle-craft to reach this zone. The lack of footpaths and motorized boats keeps the environment quiet, making it the best area to observe the National Natural Monument up close.

The branches and roots of the Yaeyama Hirugi trees form a dense tunnel over the water. Gliding through these sections feels like a jungle expedition. You will need to duck your head and navigate carefully to pass under the low-hanging branches.

These quieter, narrower parts of the river lie deeper into the forest. Sheltered from the wind, these zones are where wild birds and butterflies are most active. Keep your voice low and paddle softly to avoid startling the animals.

Small, secluded limestone caves sit tucked away in the backcountry sections of the river. Guides often include these on standard SUP or kayak tours. Ask your guide beforehand if the tide levels on that day permit safe cave exploration.
